Gas fitting and appliance connection in Warragul
Gas fitting in Warragul: connecting or moving cooktops, heaters and gas hot water, LPG cylinder sites, licence class checks and the compliance certificate.
A gas fitter in Warragul connects, moves, replaces or caps off gas appliances such as cooktops, space heaters and gas hot water units, on mains gas in town or bottled LPG on rural blocks. In Victoria that work needs a gasfitter whose licence covers it, and most of it needs a compliance certificate no matter how small the job is. This site passes your gas job to an independent local gasfitter, who inspects, prices and carries out the work under their own licence.

What gas jobs do Warragul homes ask about?
Most gas enquiries in town fall into a handful of types. Knowing which one yours is helps the gasfitter work out how long it will take and what parts to bring.
- Swapping an old gas cooktop for a new one in the same spot on the bench.
- Moving a cooktop or oven during a kitchen renovation, which means extending or rerouting the gas pipe.
- Connecting a new gas space heater, or removing one and capping the line safely.
- Replacing a gas hot water unit, or disconnecting one when the household changes to electric.
- Adding a gas point outside for a barbecue or patio heater.
- Moving LPG cylinders when a deck, carport or extension goes in where they used to stand.
- A smell of gas around an appliance, the meter or the cylinders.
Hot water breakdowns and choosing a replacement unit are covered on the hot water repairs page. This page sticks to the gas side of the job: the pipe, the connection, the appliance and the paperwork.
Is gas fitting a separate licence from plumbing?
Yes. In Victoria, gasfitting is its own class of work, separate from water supply, sanitary and drainage plumbing. A plumber can be licensed for several classes or only one, so a business that cleared your drain last year may not be allowed to touch your gas line.
The Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC) keeps the register. Its find and check a practitioner search lets you look someone up by name, business name or licence number and shows the classes they hold, the licence status and any conditions on it. Look for gasfitting in the list before anyone starts work. Our about page walks through the other checks worth making.
Which jobs need a compliance certificate at any value?
Most plumbing work only needs a compliance certificate once its total value passes a set amount. Gas work is different. The BPC lists these jobs as needing a certificate whatever they cost:
| Gas job | Certificate needed | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Installing a Type A gas appliance (cooktop, heater, gas hot water) | Yes, at any value | Covers a new appliance or a like-for-like swap |
| Relocating a Type A appliance | Yes, at any value | Includes moving a cooktop to another bench |
| Replacing a Type A appliance | Yes, at any value | Even when the new one goes on the same fitting |
| Converting an appliance to another gas (mains to LPG, or back) | Yes, at any value | Needs the right conversion parts for that model |
| Consumer gas piping work | Yes, at any value | New, extended or altered pipe on your side of the meter or cylinder |
| Complex gas installations and Type B appliances | Handled by Energy Safe Victoria | Larger commercial and industrial equipment, outside the BPC scheme |
Type A appliances are the everyday household ones that carry a certification label. Type B appliances are larger or custom equipment, and the BPC page says those, along with complex installations, are overseen by Energy Safe Victoria instead.
Only a licensed practitioner can issue a certificate. The gasfitter gives you a copy and lodges it with the BPC within five days of finishing. The compliance certificate guide covers the rest of the rules, including what to do if you never received one. Keep your copy with the house papers, because a buyer, insurer or future tradesperson may ask for it.
Can I still put in a gas appliance after 2027?
It depends on the appliance and the house. AusNet Services, the gas distributor, sums up the Victorian changes on its new rules for gas and electric homes page:
- A house whose building permit is issued in 2027 or later cannot have a gas connection at all; the Building Regulations 2018 carry that change, which starts on the first day of 2027. Permits approved by 31 December 2026 may still include gas.
- In houses that already exist, a worn-out gas water heater that a gasfitter cannot fix or keep safe has to give way to an electric unit once March 2027 begins. The Plumbing Regulations 2018 hold that requirement.
- Existing gas cooktops and heaters can be repaired, and can be replaced with new gas models if you prefer.
- AusNet says bottled LPG can still be used for barbecues, and in regional homes for hot water or cooking.
So a cooktop swap in an established Warragul house is still a normal gas job after 2027. A gas hot water unit that has failed for good is the case that changes. The 2027 gas hot water rule guide explains the detail, including the open question over LPG water heaters, and the gasfitter quoting your job should tell you which side of the line it falls on.
How does LPG work on a rural block?
Outside the reticulated gas streets, many homes around Warragul, Yarragon and the hill country run on bottled LPG. The cylinders stand against an outside wall and feed the house through a regulator and a changeover valve. Common jobs on these setups:
- moving cylinders away from a new opening, window, deck or drain
- replacing a tired regulator, pigtail or changeover valve
- converting an appliance from natural gas to LPG when someone moves out of town, or the reverse
- running a new line from the cylinder bank to a shed, outdoor kitchen or second dwelling
Converting an appliance needs the maker’s conversion kit for that exact model, and the gasfitter has to confirm the appliance is approved for the new gas before doing it. Some older units cannot be converted at all. If you are on the Yarragon area page side of the shire with cylinders, tell the gasfitter how many there are and roughly where they stand.
What does a careful gasfitter check before connecting anything?
A careful gasfitter does more than tighten a fitting. Before signing off, expect them to:
- Isolate the supply at the meter or cylinder and confirm it is off.
- Check that the appliance is certified for use in Australia and suits the gas type at the house.
- Size the pipe so the appliance gets enough gas when everything else is running too.
- Fit the connection to the installation requirements in AS/NZS 5601.1, the gas installation standard.
- Pressure test the line and test for leaks with the gas back on.
- Light the appliance, check the flame and the operating pressure, and check flues and ventilation.
- Explain the isolation valve to you and leave the manual.
- Issue the compliance certificate and lodge it.
A gasfitter who is doing the job properly will turn down some requests: connecting an imported appliance with no Australian certification, fitting a heater in a room without the ventilation it needs, or leaving a disconnected line uncapped. Treat a refusal like that as a sign you have the right person.
What does gas fitting cost around Warragul?
The closest published estimate is a Melbourne one. What’s The Damage puts gas fitting at $260 to $680 per point, covering the pipe and connection for one appliance. Warragul prices can differ from the Melbourne figure because of travel and local rates, so read it as a guide only.
What pushes a quote up:
- a long pipe run under the floor or through a slab
- a pipe upgrade because the existing line is too small for the new appliance
- conversion parts when changing gas type
- moving LPG cylinders and the pipe that goes with them
- removing and disposing of the old appliance
The certificate is part of the job, and the Warragul plumbing price guide lays out the other published local bands if you want to compare.
What if I smell gas?
Treat it as urgent. Turn the gas off at the meter or, on LPG, close the valve on the cylinder. Open doors and windows, do not use light switches, phones or anything that might spark inside the house, and keep naked flames away. Move people outside. Then contact the gas distributor using the emergency line printed on your gas bill or your LPG supplier’s paperwork. Do not use this website for a live gas leak: send an enquiry once the area is safe and the supply is off.
Next step
Send your gas fitting enquiry with the suburb, the appliance you want connected, moved or removed, and whether you are on mains gas or LPG cylinders. Add a photo of the appliance’s data plate or the model number from the box, a photo of the meter or cylinder setup, and a rough measure of how far the appliance sits from where the gas comes in. If you are replacing a gas hot water unit, say how old it is and whether it has stopped working altogether.
Frequently asked questions
- Can any Warragul plumber connect my new gas cooktop?
Only if their licence includes gasfitting. Victoria treats gasfitting as a separate class from drainage, sanitary and water supply plumbing, so check the class on the Building and Plumbing Commission register before the job is booked.
- Do I get a certificate for a simple cooktop swap?
Yes. The BPC says installing, relocating or replacing a Type A gas appliance needs a compliance certificate whatever the job costs. The gasfitter gives you a copy and lodges one with the BPC within five days of finishing.
- Will I be allowed to replace my gas heater with another gas heater after 2027?
AusNet Services says existing gas cooktops and heaters can be repaired, or replaced with gas models if you choose. The 1 March 2027 change applies to gas water heaters that have reached end of life in existing homes.
- Can my natural gas oven be converted to run on LPG?
Some can and some cannot. It depends on whether the maker offers a conversion kit for that model and approves it for the other gas. Conversion is certificate work at any value, so a licensed gasfitter has to do it.
- Who looks after gas work in commercial kitchens or larger buildings?
The BPC page says complex gas installations and Type B appliances are overseen by Energy Safe Victoria rather than the plumbing compliance certificate scheme. Mention the equipment type in your enquiry so the right kind of provider looks at it.
